North London residents can significantly help the environment by using local reuse and recycling centres. While some think these centres are far or inaccessible without a car, they are usually closer than perceived, and most offer pedestrian access, making walking or cycling a viable option. Addressing the climate emergency requires changes in daily habits, with recycling and repairing prioritised, and disposal considered only when necessary. By utilising these accessible centres for unwanted items, residents can make a substantial positive environmental impact.

The North London Waste Authority commissioned Hackney Design Studio to develop outdoor, social, and video content to announce the reopening of recycling centres after the pandemic and to promote walking and cycling to nearby centres with small electrical goods.

To help people identify the recycling centres, the team designed unique illustrated images featuring maps, local buildings and street names. The designs also incorporated the standard and recognisable pink electrical recycling icons for visual impact and contrast with the NLWA corporate colour, and each of the seven north London boroughs had their own local image variations for outdoor, social, and newsletter advertising. To complement these images, we also created a simple explainer video and recruited NWLA staff members to model as the walking, cycling and cargo bike people featured in the illustrations.
