The World Health Organisation has a 95% target for childhood vaccines such as MMR to prevent disease spread. London falls significantly short of this goal, with only 72% of children receiving both MMR doses by age 5. This is the lowest rate in any region, compared to 84% in England. Over a third of London boroughs have uptake rates below 70%.
To address this, the "Why We Get Vaccinated" campaign was created in partnership with London Councils, UK Health Security Agency, ADPH London and the NHS to encourage open conversations about vaccine importance within communities with low vaccination rates.

Hackney Design Studio were commissioned to work with communities to develop a three-year pan-London campaign. We were asked to create a toolkit including guides, videos, posters and outdoor adverts, along with social media assets, ensuring that all partners were able to localise content to their borough or audience.

This campaign and assets prioritises providing clear, factual information about vaccines, addressing common questions and misconceptions. Instead of urging immediate action, it enables Londoners to make informed decisions for themselves and their families. To ensure relevance and community ownership, Hackney Design Studio used a collaborative approach, testing initial concepts within targeted community networks. This co-production method allowed residents to actively shape the campaign. The final assets, include local resident photography, adaptable templates, translated variations and videos, are readily accessible online, enabling widespread dissemination.
